I live in an apartment and am having trouble with my roommate and my car.
I do not live in my apartment on the weekends and it appears my roommate is
going through my closet and through my stuff, because things seem to keep
    moving around on me.
Also, my key has been keyed 4-5 times in the last two months but unknown
    persons.
I would like to set up a wireless camera monitoring system using cheap and
    surplus components.
I need a security VCR that can record 40hrs or so on one tape from two
cameras, and I need two wireless infared cameras that I can install, one
which records my room, and the other which records a view of my car. These
need to function in total darkness.
Any suggestions? There are wireless camera kits on ebay for $9.99, but I
question if their quality will be any better than a cheap PC webcam, which
would bascially help none at all.
    Looking to spend $200 tops.

    Time for a new roommate.

As one (of many I'm sure) people who have had a roommate get wierd on
them, all I can say is that it's definately time for a new roommate.

The only thing that monitoring will likely do is create a hostile
enviroment where stupid little games will get played. This would likely
escalate any problem to something much more annoying

Have you tried just talking to him? :-)
(Yes, I'm aware that that just doesn't work sometimes. It didn't for
    me.)

Some things are just not worth it.

Even though some people here still hate them for the pop-up ads a few years
ago, you can't really beat http://www.x10.com. Their wired and wireless
camera stuff is even cheaper on eBay

X10's image quality sucks. Barly can make out stuff. Best bet would be get
IR CCD Cameras (semi good quality, non X10). Then get a quad bus pci
encoder card and some DVR software.

This is what I use and it works great (though, not wireless):

    http://www.zoneminder.com/

(only 4 ports on that card work under linux but you can add multiple cards)

night vision only works on a short range - but works great.

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers!

I recommend the sort that you can build out of four knuckles and a bowl
of Wheaties. If you feel like something a little more extravagant,
    there's always a "blanket party".

    yep, I second that notion.
But, if you really want "proof" or what-not, I also second zoneminder
and linux media lab's capture cards. It's not exactly cake to setup,
but then again I probably would've had an easier time with it had I
not been working with someone who insisted on reinstalling linux
everytime a config broke(instead of looking at a log once, which is
how I eventually found the problem). So yeah, there.
