    Unix. It was coined by Brian Kernighan as a play on Multics,
    a multi-user S developed by GE and others (including, for
    a time, Bell Labs). The idea was that Unix would run on
    machines small enough for use by one person -- an uncommon
    thing three and a half decades ago.

    BTW, Multics is essentially an acronym for some forgettable
    combination of things like "multi user" and "control system",
    IIRC.

    the yet-to-be named S that Mr. Kerninghan exclaimed something like "Ha,
