    I cant even recall if a 1.6 will fit right now and the box is at a

    I'll keep searching for a doc on the net though
    seagate ST173404LCV 1.6" HIGH (FULL HEIGHT)
    Unfortunately, the Ultra2's disk slots are only 1" tall.

    uh, might you have an Ultra 1? the drive slots stack in the U1 and
    you can fit the half-high drive in the lower position (even still put
    a 1" drive in the top slot as well though it doesn't leave much room
    between the drives for ventilation).

    in the U2, the drives sit side-by-side and the metal openings in the
    chassis limit you to 1" drives (the cdrom and floppy go above the
    drive and there is a metal sheld part of the chassis that would require
    some major cutting away to fit half-high drives, but one willing to
    chop away could make half-high drives fit and not have the cdrom/floppy
    bracket in place).

    thanks

    Unfortunately, this disk will not fit in an Ultra 2. I had to ask myself
    this question recently and both from RTFM and looking at my Ultra 2 a
    1.6" disk physically will not fit in either slot. I wish it weren't so,
    as the disk you mention is listed on Prcewatch from several vendors
    *very* cheap (about $35 IIRC), and that disk has a 16MB cache as well.

    What it all boils down to is that in Seagate's numbering scheme,
    ST1=1.6" drive, and ST3=1" drive. Both on ebay and from resellers, the
    1" drives go for about twice as much in $/GB.

    As I said, needed more disk for my U2, so I ended up buying a Seagate
    ST336706LC (1" 36GB 80-pin SCA) off ebay for $34/shipped with a spud
    bracket.

    At some point I'd like to pick up a 6-slot 711 and populate it with some
    of those cheap 1.6" drives. That would make a really nice Solaris
    10/zfs/raidz setup.

    3.2" = full height
    1.6" = half height
    1" = nominal one-third height

    I was the one that started the "largest disk for a U60" thread. :-)

    I actually bought two ST173404LCV's for a U2 back in April, but then when
    I took them out of the box, I knew that they would definitely not fit, so
    I returned them without opening the static bags. After the return, I
    stumbled upon a Craigslist entry for a group of Ultra 60's, and I picked
    up one. Its drive cage could easily take two 1.6" hard drives. D'oh!

    However, I wanted the drives for this system to not die on me early, so I
    ended up going the whole 9 yards and getting a pair of new,
    5-year-warranty ST373207LC drives for $185 each. Maybe it was overkill,
    but then I can still RMA them if one of them goes bad. I don't know how
    loud or hot the ST173404LCV's would have been, but the ST373207LC's are
    rather quiet and don't get that warm.

    You are both right I was thinking of the Ultra 1 when I was describing
    where the drives sit. But the Ultra-2 I have seems to have the drive
    where the cdrom should go. This is how the machine came when I got it.

    I'm pretty happy with my little U2, but I'm thinking I might have been
    better off with a U60.

    course, as Murphy's Law dictates, I'm now seeing U60s everywhere I
    look for low prices.

    well

    I need to get a pair of drives for my U2, and I'm not finding what I
    want.

    New ones are so expensive, but I need to get up and running, so I might
    have to buy a new drive or two.

    I see a lot of deals on used drives, but rarely do they tell you how
    old they are. 1-2 year old SCSI, I'm K with that most of the time.
    But most of what I find at places like spartantech and other shops
    are hitting 5 years old. No thanks.
