Good news: After someone (Mr. Bill?) mentioned that they were happy with
their 17" Dell 1704FPT LCD monitor, I placed an order last week for work.
It was dirt cheap due to all the discountssomething like $200 shipped.
Came in yesterday, and I finally got around to opening ithey, this is a
bigger box than I'm used to seeingwhy does it have "1905FP" printed on
it? Packing list shows 1704, but they sent me the 1905 19" panel (!)
instead. Hopefully, it's a free upgrade.
Bad news: I've got a low-end Dell 17" panel at work, and the 1704 was
intended to sit next to it in a dual head config (replacing my 17" Sony
CRT). Between 'more pixels, not bigger pixels' and a desire to halfway
match the other panel, I'm not sure what to do. If only it would do
    1600x1200 native
Moral of the storyif you want a 1905, now might be a good time to order
    a 1704 instead. They're still showing 2-3 weeks out on the 1704, so I
suspect that they're shipping the 1905 rather than make people wait it out
    for the 1704.

I've actually got a 1701, but the '04 is just the current model. I've
also got an E171FP (2.something years old), and just purchased two current
E173FPs in the past 2 months, and am very happy with all of them (no dead
    pixels whatsoever).

(no, I'm not made of money - I have a single E173FP here at home because
they were on sale for $223. Everything else is at work Anybody want
to take up a collection to buy me an Ultra20? *grin*)

You'll just have to sell off your old, obsolete (ultra)SPARC junk. :-)

Shawn already called shotgun on the E420R when/if I decide to retire it. 8-)

It *would* be nice to have SunHELP on a machine with a current Sun service
contract, but I've not worked with Solaris x86/64 enough to decide if I
want to change platforms. Remote serial is *so* nice, although this
Simple-Link KVM/IP is pretty spiffy too.

    Hi:

Dumb question can you get one of these Dell monitors to work on a sun
    box?

Depends entirely on the box in question.

Most of the time all you have to do is type the resolution you want
    from the openboot prom:

    setenv

or whatever resolution and refresh rate the monitor will support. If I
can use an old Gateway monitor on a Sun U10
then I don't think there'll be an issue. The setup info BTW is
    shamelessly stolen from Bill's site:

, and you need an adapter from 13W3 -VGA or whatever the monitor
    has on it.

Those are on E-Bay. I believe it would be 13W3 Male to VGA 15 Female.

I've got the E171FP working fine on my Ultra 60, using a 13W3 to HD15
converter on the back of the Expert3D card.

    Hi

Thanks people I work in a wee tiny lab by the sea that belongs to Cal
    Tech.
I have no hardware budget officially and I make do with old gear and donations of
    gear
from various contacts. Now and then I even get to squeeze money out of the parent

    lab on campus.
My boss is in his mid eighties and has moderate retinal degeneration and
    detatchment
so big screens are not a luxury. My sources of free 21 inch sun tubes are drying
    up and now
that flat screen prices are falling, and there is a Dell store only a few miles
    from here, I
thought I might give them a try.

    Thanks,

    John
