    So, from reading the nsITreeView object's documentation on XULPlanet,
    there seems to be a way to make tree cells "editable." But I can't for
    the life of me figure out how to force it from script. Is there one?

    That's not inline text editing as you might think. Inline text editing
    will probably get implemented for Gecko 1.9 (bug 201499). There's also
    a hack used in adblock plus, which works on 1.8 builds.

    Support for inline editing of treecells was added this morning to 1.9.
