I'm trying to upload small, basic files to my Linux server. The
server recognizes my username, lets me read and view files, but
it won't let me upload files. Instead, it gives me "550 permission
denied." Note: I've tried passive mode.

You can't upload files anywhere (usually only in /incoming
IIRC). Check/tune your .conf file.
