I am using SquirrelMail version 1.4.4. Can someone please confirm
whether
having to login twice (once to login to server, another to login to
squirrelmail, is a misconfiguration or a feature of SquirrelMail.

Log on to what server? It sounds like some kind of misconfiguration to
me but you haven't really provided enough specific information to really
be able to tell. Squirrelmail will automagically handle the IMAP server
login based on your SM login credentials. No need to log in twice.
