Something on my PC is creating incoming traffic. I've no idea what and
would like to stop it if it's a nasty thing.
Can anyone recommend cheap or free software that I could use on my home
PC running XP with a 56K connection to tell me exactly what applications
are talking to the internet in real time?
    Thanks.

Find out what's loading when your systems starts:

Find out what's running on your system:

Use a firewall. Zone Alarm will monitor both incoming and outgoing
traffic and alert you about what program is trying to send data:

Zonealarm (zonelabs.com) has a free version that will monitor traffic.
    Don't get the pay version

Thanks, but I have all of those already. None of them tell me *exactly*
what application is talking to the Internet. ZoneAlarm does to an
extent, but it's not very specific.

I use ZA Pro. It will show you what apps currently are running traffic
on the Internet. Further, examine the program logs and you can see very
specific info on what processes have done what. Go through the Programs
listing and mark anything you don't recognize as "Ask" in the Access and
Server columns. The next time one of those processes tries to access
the net ZA will alert you.

Thanks Ed. I'll consider upgrading ZoneAlarm.
