    hello,
    happy new year
windows xp (home) came with nav which has expired i don't like
    norton at all.
    it had a firewall also.
    1. is norton difficult to uninstall?
    2. is avg 7.x (the free version) ok?
    3. i use antivir on 2 other systems (a win95b and a win98se) i like it
but wonder whether it is adequate for an xp pc?
    4. i use dial-up (i.e. i am not continuously online) -- how important is
    a firewall?
if it is VERY important (i imagine it is), is the avg firewall good? or
is the antivir firewall good protection?
(i am not using the system until i have an antiviral etc.)
    thank you in advance!

Yes but Symantec offers help at their web site:

    >2. is avg 7.x (the free version) ok?

It has the poorest detection rates.

    Better than AVG.

    >4. i use dial-up (i.e. i am not continuously online) -- how important is

Extremely important. Activate the XP firewall. See this:

    They should do the job.

    >(i am not using the system until i have an antiviral etc.)

    and a firewall!

    >thank you in advance!

    You're welcome.

As a user? No. You might be interested in looking at a detection
    comparative:

All I can tell you is that we see many user complaints concerning
NAV. But that's distorted since NAV is so widely used.

I'm a very biased user. So far as I'm concerned, there's only one
AV worth having and that's Kaspersky. Their new version 6 is
still in Beta, but it should be available soon for purchase I would
think. They've taken steps to speed it up considerably, and it
is now far more than just a file scanner with its proactive module
    (and other features and modules).

    hi and thanks again!
nav took care of my first question (how to remove) it removed itself:)
i installed avg7 for now b/c i am going to get kapersky and want an av
    while downloading it
i have also heard very good things about kapersky.
i imagine the prior version (?)5 is ok i.e. better than avg or
nothingfor now until vs. 6 is available.

i enabled the xp firewall (i have sp2)
    thanks so much again!
    sincerely
    Tanya
