Is there a CD-RM player on it?
Does it have the ability to boot off a CD? (Most laptops have.)
You can get install CD's for any Linux distro. I don't know what distros are best
for laptops, I have installed Fedora Core 4 on an old one, and there was no
problems. You may prefer to start with Ubuntu, since it's only a single CD.
I bet you only need to consider how much ram there is and how much disk space.
Anything less than 128 Mb ram means you have to take special precautions.
You should have 5 GByte disk, but it's not too hard to live inside, say, 1.5 GB.
If you have a network connection for it, you can download a special boot floppy
image, and boot the laptop from it, and do a network install. Just tell us
the details about your laptop, and there are friendlier people lurking that
will come forward if and when they have something usefull to say.
