I have used AVG and also Avast! Antivirus Home Edition:

    And also AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic:

    http://www.free-av.com/

They all have seemed to me to work well.

    Review: Free Antivirus Software

I believe I've seen Mary post here before, so if you're reading Mary, how
come this time you didn't test removal capabilities? Lots of times people
don't actually go looking for a free AV program until they need to scan and
clean their machine so removal is an important feature.

    Hi Geo,

I do removal tests for spyware/adware only. The virus detection scores come
from AV-Test.org and at the time, removal results for those particular
products weren't readily available to me. (This doesn't mean that
AV-Test.org does not have them or did not at the time - please interpret my
limited answer as *my* limitation and not a reflection of AV-Test.org). West
Coast Labs performs removal testing as part of their Anti-Virus Level 2
certification (all ItW viruses are included in these tests according to
their documentation). You can find a list of Anti-Virus Level 2 certified
    products at:

AV-Test.org is a project of the Business-Information-Workgroup at the
Institute of Technical and Business Information Systems at the
Guericke University Magdeburg (Germany) in cooperation with
AV-Test GmbH. For details, visit: http://www.av-test.org/

I agree that virus removal tests would be a nice addition to the review -
unfortunately my resources (time) only allow for spyware/adware.

    I vouch for AVAST.

It's a little hysterical when it founds some suspicious but works fine
and I hardly notice it's running. Norton uses far more CPU.

What makes you think Grisoft registered that domain?

Just visit http://www.clamav.co.uk/ , then you'll see redirection.

That doesn't look like an official GriSoft site. In fact the domain
it redirects to is not owned by GriSoft (nor is there a link the
official site). See the following whois lookup at www.nic.uk:

It's most likely and opportunistic squatter trying to squeeze clam-av
as in "Pay up, or we'll keep redirecting potential users to
    information about a competitor"

You would think the an official site would be a little more
sophisticated than a text page. Plus the grammar "Grisoft say:"
    rather than "Grisoft says:"

    And this little tidbit:
"The following information is provided by Spice New Media and is for
    your reference only."

I use free AVG by Grisoft. I have heard others are better but it has been
protecting my old computer for a couple of years with no problems. You get
daily updates too and it is much better than Norton which I had before.

    Hello, Arsen Kirillov!

I use this combination (both are an opensource):
    ClamWin 0.88.2.3 http://www.clamwin.com
    and
    WinPooch 0.5.10 http://winpooch.free.fr/

ClamWin is only scanner (true, with plugin), but WinPooch is an
universal monitor (file, registry, network) which scans any launched
executable before run with the Clam engine.

WinPooch has an annoying bug (problem with an UNC paths) and too
complicated GUI alerts and warnings for dummies, but anyway it's one of
best resident monitors I have seen.
