I installed from cd I burned using the download as you install off
debian.org I think it was a successful download. All I have is like a
DS prompt after entering as the user I created during install. I can get
around a little using cd and dir but that's about it. I sort of expected a
desktop like knoppix. What do I do now?

You have to set it up and access it. Debian comes with the xorg windows
program and kde windows manager and desktop.

There are several resources you can google for. Here's a start:

Google with keywords like newbie, beginner, basics, tutorial, etc.

Debian should not be your first distro - besides being a challenge
to install, for the newbie, Deb has many quirks as the one you're
    describing.

If you installed with the desktop stuff, then try running 'startx' (no
quotes) see if you get a GUI. if not, then try some of these commands:

    apt-get install x-window-system
    apt-get install kde (or gnome)
apt-get install kdm (or gdm) if you want it to boot to GUI right from boot.

some of that should get you started.
