If it had been on secnews, it would never have reached that turn,
because it would already have been closed down.
As an aside, I don't think anybody ever cared about what happened in
People asked and answered questions
and also engaged in a certain amount -- perhaps even a preponderance --
of bull****ting, just like at real-life work. I don't think anybody
ever got angry, though
Aarrgghh, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was all just a seething mass of
impotent rage beneath the friendly surface. How could I have been so
stupid?
I think a few of us abused that group for quite a while :-)

Hardly. Chuck Simmons and TenThumbs took turns being Master Po to my
Grasshopper.
Did they assume new identities or just dry up and blow away?
The unwritten rule is you have to give back.
AARRGGHH. You wrote it. Now we're all doomed.
A thing I noticed when I read other groups without resident
Experts -- the beginner questions were generally answered by people who
had maybe 2 months more experience than the beginners. I think this
says something good about humans.

Chuck passed last year. TenThumbs, I dunno, maybe just on extended vacation.

Sorry to hear that. Both of it. I just looked over my list of saved
messages from the group. There was stuff from Glen Sanft and Kevin Chu
too.
I Googled. I feel old.

Chuck's passing was particularly sad to say the least simply because he
posted in our private group with daily updates and within only a coupla
days prior to his demise.
I have no idea where TenThumbs is or was. Probably off in some
obscure *nix group.

TenThumbs and I had an ongoing email conversation that abruptly stopped
one day and never resumed. He had "evaporated" a time or two before but
never for this long. Google shows nothing from mid 2004 or so.
Maybe, like Glen Sanft, he found gainful employment :-)
Usenet can be somewhat mercurial. I have consistently used my real name,
but that's becoming rare.

I only know TenThumbs as "John" as we exchanged private mail on a number
of occasions. Maybe he got sucked into a main frame and now known as
"Tron", who knows. ;-)

The death of net friends is almost the same as the death of flesh+blood
friends. The shock is perhaps even greater because we never had an
inkling. pixel is very like another, it's just the arrangement that
matters.
To absent friends

Hmph. Get a little money and you forget your old friends?

Me too, sort of. I've always been bashley@ various places, but I
recently added the 101 to make it more disposable if need be.
I've been in at the beginning of several newsgroups, and it's sad to see
how they deteriorate over time. The funny people run out of material,
the easy questions have all been asked, the newbies cease to be
distinguishable one from another, everything has been said and people
move on.
Like work friends. You know their most intimate secrets, at least some
of them, and after one of you leaves you never talk to them again.
Maybe once or twice, but more than that is a real exception.
I added "Call Sandy" to my .reminders file -- pop it up every 2 months.
Twice since 1985 isn't often enough. My other good boss died.

I just got this today and I thought it was funny. We need a little
humour in these newsgroups:
A letter from grandma!
The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a "honk
if you love Jesus" bumper sticker.
I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from
a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer
meeting, so I bought the sticker and put in on my bumper.
I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in
thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn't notice that the
light had changed.
It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't
honked, I'd never have noticed.
I found that LTS of people love Jesus. Why, while I was sitting
there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and when he leaned
out of his window and screamed, "for the love of God, G! G!" What
an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus. Everyone started honking so
I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all
these loving people.
I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. There must
have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling
something about a sunny beach
I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger
stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat
what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck
sign or something.
Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window
and gave him the good luck sign back.
My grandson burst out laughing, why even he was enjoying this
religious experience.
A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that
They got out of their cars and started walking towards me.
I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is
when I noticed the light had changed.
So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on
through the intersection.
I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before
the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave
them after All the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down,
leaned out of the window And gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign
one last time as I drove away.
I hope this starts your week with a smile, and helps brighten your day
in a special way!

Grandma clearly lives in Monterey Park, Cal.

Always good to see old friends
