If I explicitly disable both dfs switches in 3.0.23RC3, I can't access my
    shares any longer.
Maybe that's the reason Jerry has no interest to do so :-)

that might be a reason ;-) but I can't reproduce that here.
did you turn it off with or without rebooting the windows client after
    that?

by the way - the fact that a Windows does not recognice that a CIFS
server switches from DFS back and forth without a long timeout or a
reboot is another good reason for not changing the default.

You're *killing* me. There is no debate about the current
    default in 3.0.23.

    cheers, jerry

Jerry, I'm sure you like getting feedback, so don't talk like this if you get
    constructive comments and arguments, please.

Jerry, I'm sure you like getting feedback, so don't
talk like this if you get constructive comments
    and arguments, please.

Don't be so serious. :-) I'm just saying that the votes
are in for 3.0.23 and the default is not going to change.
I don't remember a single technical point in your mails
that would convince me otherwise. If there are bugs, then
we fix them so the fact that you found one or two bugs is
not a reason to revert the change.

Your other point was that you thought it would confused
users. My counter point is that admins can simply turn it
off if they like. Besides the fact that your belief
is based on speculation. You have presented no evidence
that people are actually confused by the extra tab.

So if you have additional points to make, then I'm all
ears. But continued comments like "I still think we should
revert the change to the default" doesn't strengthen your
    position.

You should know me well enough by now that I'm not dogmatic
about my own position if you can provide a better technical
basis. But so far, you haven't done that. Jeremy agreed.
The fact that Guenther didn't realize the 'msdfs root' had
been changed strengthens my position and not yours because
obviously the extra tab was not too confusing. :-)

    cheers, jerry
