Try to put the FQDN of the relay server in your local /etc/hosts file.
Example :
10.11.12.13 mailserver.domain.com
And then in your sendmail.cf file :
mailserver.domain.com
Restart the sendmail daemon and try again.
Is relaying enabled on your e-mail server ?

Hi,
All the local mails are going through fine. Its only when i am sending
external email i get this problem. I changed the smart relay in the
sendmail.cf file to new.com, but for some reason it is still trying to
send to old.com. I can't understand why. In my sendmail.cf file there is
no mention what so ever of "old.com" not even in the comments, but still
it is trying to send to old.comand since old.com does not exist any
more, the mail is failing.
Any suggestions as to what i am missing out here
