Yesterday I began to have a problem with Konqueror, that still persists. I
had been playing around with associations attempting to get wndows video
files embedded in web pages to play, so I'd only been setting options for the
various window media types. Since then, if I type a url into the address box
    it immediately launches mozilla-firefox.
I do use firefox to read from urls in kmail messages, but like to keep
konqueror as an option for the pages that display better. Whatever could
make it launch firefox when the url is typed into the addressbox?

Try checking the settings for html files. Make sure firefox is not set as the
    first viewer.

No, Konqueror is top of the list.

Hmm, check that KHTML is top on the embedded tab

Had you at any point chosen firefox as your default web browser using Kcontrol
-KDE Components -Component Chooser ? This behaviour is consistant with
having selected a different webbrowser in this dialog. typing the http URL
into konqueror, it will pass it to the other browser you've selected as your
    default instead of loading it.

    Regards.

Yes, firefox is named there, but until Sunday afternoon I could always
manually open konqueror and type in a url. Sometimes I want to choose a
particular browser for a particular site. Since it worked as required before
Sunday afternoon I'd really like to know what changed it. Later today I'll
try changing that setting back to konqueror and see if the problem persists,
but I have to go out now.

    Some progress -
I've set the Default for browsing to open "in an application based on the
contents of the URL". Now firefox does not launch, but xine tries to.
However, I then see the message "A problem occur while loading a library or a
decoder: cook.so.6.0". Maybe this is related to the plugin problems we have
been discussing in another thread. I've never heard of cook.so.6.0. Can
    anyone enlighten me?

After that I tried setting it to open in Konqueror. I then tried to launch
www.bbc.co.uk/radio, and it had opened 26 instances of konqueror before I
could stop it. This is hopeless. Konqueror will just have to be lost as a
    web browser for me.

Yes Anne, it is the RealAudio codec. If xine behaves like kaffeine, this
will let it find the codec:

    mkdir /usr/lib/RealPlayer8
    cd /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/
    ln -s /real/ Codecs

(The plf codecs are in /usr/lib/real but kaffeine looks
in /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/Codecs which is where the RealPlayer 8 codecs
    were.)

I suggest you rename ~/.kde to ~/.kde-save (working in a console session, eg
Ctl-Alt-F1) and start afresh with default settings for kde.

That is my conclusion too. It is too complicated to configure and plugin
handling is broken, at least it is in Mandriva 2005LE.
