    Created a user.js file in C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\kz1mdweo.default and added the lines from
    #app_expandnames.
The groups are still abbreviated, has it changed since v1.5 came out?

If there were a horizontal scroll bar then there'd be no need to resize the
window. E does this very well. I wish TB would include this feature.

Yes. Making the window larger will allow reading the lengthy group names.
I'm aware that you didn't mention a horizontal scroll bar. I brought it up.
I'm hoping that this will be a feature which will be included in a future
version of TB. More than a feature. I consider it a current omission.

Then again, abbreviated is the default setting, so one could argue that
    the scrollbar is not needed.

Personally, I hate the abbreviations, so I don't mean to argue. With a
large screen res, I would rather drag the divider, and avoid the
inconvenience of the horizontal scroll. However, with a lower screen
res, your point is well taken.

The benefit of the abbreviations over the horizontal scroll bar is that
the most significant portion of the newsgroup name tends to be within
view. I'd much rather learn that 'n.p.m.' expands to
'netscape.public.mozilla' than either constantly scroll to see which
newsgroup I'm looking at or have my folder pane wide enough to fit the
    full newsgroup name.

I do think, however, that hovering your mouse over the newsgroup name
should show the full newsgroup name in a tooltip. That's a pretty
standard UI convention that many products get right.

I disagree. I think that a horizontal scroll offers advantages (over either
adjusting the window size or hovering the mouse over the abbreviated name).
There's no need to "constantly scroll" to see a group name. And there would
certainly be less need to re-scroll than there would to hover the mouse over
each abbreviated name. For the most part, you'd set the horizontal scroll
where you need it and leave it there. E has the horizontal scroll feature
and I find it quite useful. I wonder why it was omitted in TB in favor of
    abbreviations?

The funny thing is, if you set the abbreviate pref to false, and leave

IMH, why would a user need to constantly scroll to the right to see the
names of the newsgroups that are so often used? Subscribe, set and
forget. I know what my newsgroups are without having to have a
    horizontal scrollbar.

My biggest gripe is that "Pretty Names" ended with the demise of the
    Communicator series.

And the fact that we disagree was pretty much my point, I guess.
