I know this is a virus newsgroup but perhaps someone could help me
    with a problem.
I have an old 486/33 desktop computer that I am trying to make
operable again. It has not been run since 1993. The batteries ran
down but I replaced them. The computer originally came with a hard
drive, a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive, a 4 1/2 inch floppy drive and one
empty bay. Later on I added a Colorado tape drive which I then
removed years later to put into another computer. It appears that
removing this tape drive somehow affected the configuration of the
computer. I can't remember if I switched the gray ribbon when I put
in the tape drive and whether I need to switch it back or make some
other change in how things are plugged in. (By now I have accumulated
a number of old computers and gray ribbons so I'm not sure what goes
    with what.)
Anyway when the computer boots up I get the following messages:
Incorrect configuration in CMS. Run Set up.
Running Setup didn't help. I have tried switching ribbons and
re-plugging the floppy drives. At one point I got the C drive to
appear on the screen. I was able to get a list of all my directories
and files. When I tried to run different programs, the programs would
open but they would still not run and I got these messages:
Sector not found writing Drive C
    Data error reading drive.
Does anybody know what I can do here? Does it matter what gray ribbon
I use? Also what is the correct way to install the gray ribbons with
respect to the floppy drives? I noticed that all the ribbons have
either a black or a pink strip on one edge. Also, I noticed that the
hard drive has its own gray ribbon. Does that enter into any of this?
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I was planning on giving this
computer to a friend who can use it for typing.
    Thanks

First, remove and clean (with isopropl alcohol) every connector
and socket, you can. Make sure they're clean and dry before
    reconnecting.

re-plugging the floppy drives. At one point I got the C drive to

Remove everything but the keyboard, monitor, and hd. Run the cmos
setup, and disable all but the above. If it won't keep the cmos
settings after a reboot, check the battery again, with a volt meter
and make sure the battery and the connectors are clean. If that
    doesn't work, toss it<G>.

Then reinstall the floppies, and set the cmos accordingly.

Either the connectors for the hd controller, the cable, or the hd itself
is dirty, or one of them is "dead".

The connectors on the cable for a hd, and a floppy are different, so they
    cannot be mixed up.

When the connectors on the cable don't have the little tab that prevents
you from putting them on backwards, ensure the side of the cable with
the strip on it is connected to pin number 1 (you'll probably need a
magnafying glass to read the pin numbers<G>). Check the pin numbers
on both the controller, and the drive.

Make sure the hd is set as master, and use the last connector on the
    cable.

Do I understand this to mean that even though it's plugged in, the
computer still needs the battery pack of AA batteries in order keep
    the CMS setting?

The original batteries corroded and I replaced them but maybe the
battery connections or batteries are bad.

    Thanks, Bill

Yes. it would be dangerous inserting cards etc, without
    unplugging it.

    Quiet possible.
